Iruna has tons of items, skills, and monsters, each with it's own prier element. Each element has it's own strengths weaknesses. Here's the interaction between the four basic elements:
Fire < Water < Wind < Earth < Fire
Definition: Fire is weak against Water. Water weak against Wind; etc
By taking advantage of elemental weaknesses, your final damage can be increased. For example, elemental arrows add 10% but only work with bows and physical attacks. Elemental Rings apply 5% elemental damage but works with any weapon, skill, and physical attacks. Weapons aligned to a specific element(for example, Flame Bow, Wing Bow; etc) provide 20% elemental damage; versus a similar non-elemental weapon.
Dealing elemental damage that's the same as the element aligned to the monster will result in a deduction to your damage. For example, using Fire Arrow against a fire-type monster will reduce your damage by 10% instead.
Your damage is neither increased or decreased if your elemental damage is not the same as the monster or its weakness. Against a Water monster, your Flame Bow will not do more or less damage than a similar non-elemental weapon.
Flame, Ice, Thunder and Rock are more powerful versions of the four main elements. Specifically, weapons with these higher elements grant an extra 10% elemental damage to their lower elements. So if you had a Vritra, you will do 10% more damage against a Fire monster.
Light and Dark also exist as elements and they're weak against each other. (Light = Dark)
