Try these solutions:
1. Play with settings: Party Only On (speed hackers make game super hot) 2. Play with wifi only, and not LTE or 4G (LTE makes my phone hot) 3. Play in ventilated area and dont use a cell phone case 4. Do not play with phone charger plugged in (makes phone very hot)

My phone overheats when I run LTE/4G. I know I need to shut it off when my character starts free-ranging (she no longer goes where I'm directing her to go). It's kind of comical when it happens, except today...it happened when I finally got someone to party me for a boss. Thankfully, they were patient and we made it through.

my old phone used to overheat alot --and the battery indicator in game turns red but with my new phone --- the battery indicator never turns red --nor is there a notice on log wsaying device overheated --even though the phone is already about to explode xD --the heat is no joke though-- its painful to touch --and sometimes leaves a feeling of tangible pain and hotness on my palms -- i had a ceiling fan installed above my bed now -- so it alleviates abit of the heat build up -- but its still hot and the game doesnt even detect it xD

Better to not use a pack of ice. Instead, play on top of a small fan.
When hot and cold comes together, condensation forms, that means water get created and it can ruin electrical components.

Whoever told you that you should put cold things on your overheated device is obvi f*****g with you. Condensation WILL brick your phone and on top of that, you run the risk of cracking your screen.
The best way to treat overheating is turning off the device and removing it from its plastic casing... then wait til it cools off.
Playing in a cool area also avoids heating the device. (This happens to me when I play in a non-air conditioned room)

~ Do not play while charging. Not only it heats up your phone but also lessen your battery life (I did it for 3 years)
- Remove it from any casing. Especially if your phone's back is metallic as metal is considered to generate alot of heat
- Play in well ventilated area.
- And yes do not put it in freeze or any similar to that thats absurd.
- Watch your background processes and turn off unnecessary features BT/GPS etc.
- Use Wifi
- Do some break, your phone needs to rest also.
