I've stayed on through maintenance before. Sometimes the they don't kick all players. Yea, all the maps are mostly empty of players maybe 10-15 in rokoko and like 5 at megaroche. I kept all items and exp so... Not sure of the effects.
This has only happened to me once so I don't think there is a way to avoid the kick on purpose...
