Are you a noob player that gets their cheeks clapped by street mobs? Do you get knocked tf out when the boss breathes too hard? Are you confused about how you should go about solving these problems because you can't do math and/or can't tell the difference between melee and magic because you have negative IQ points? Then look no further! This is the guide for you!
Hi. I'm a lvl365 Paladin and one thing I can tell you is that dying during a boss fight is gaeh and racist. You end up having to wait a while until your pet revives you or you warp to town unable to get back to the boss fight in time.
What? You don't want to be a victim anymore? Huh? You'll lick my toes for some tips on how to defend? Disgusting. You disgust me. But fine. No toe licking tho, I'll beat the living crap outta you.
There are 3 basic mechanisms when it comes to tanking
A) Defense stats- This is the most basic of basic stats for defending which ultimately doesn't help much. But it helps nonetheless, just don't choose it over the next couple of options.
B) melee+% and magic+%- this is the most popularly known form of defense in iruna as it reduces all forms of damage dealt by a certain percentage depending on the classification of attack skills dealt on the player. Cannot exceed 95% however. By "depending on the classification of attack skills" I mean it only applies to magic and melee based attack skills. Doesn't reduce rate cut+% field effects as well as debuffs.
C) Element defense+%- This one is slightly less popular than Melee+% and magic+% due to its unavailability to classes outside of paladins and a few others. From what I know it seems to not differentiate between element melee attacks and element magic attacks? Elemental defense+% are usually specified to a specific element, however there are All Element defence buffs and equip abilities available. Usually not popular among classes outside of paladins, bishops and other single element focused classes.
These three are the base of the bases in defending. You can't get anymore RPG generic, defense focused than these. But wait, there's more!
D) Equipment def- you've probably seen them on your armor and overlooked them because they're single digit numbers. They probably pissed you off because they have the audacity to ask you for millions in resources to upgrade/refine despite being only single digits. "Cheeky Single digit bastards! Go suck it!" You'vd prolly said.
You've underestimated their power *Jedi battle music intensifies* For math reasons, they're actually incredibly OP, that's why they only come in double digits at max or it'd upset the Dev Gods. You see, its on par with melee and magic defense+% and even better they come at the end of the equation last I checked, which means its the last thing to reduce the already reduced damage.
E) Rate Cut+%- remember all the stuff I just talked about? Yeah. None of that can stop rate cut attacks. Get rekt nurd. What? You don't know what I mean? You know those crap boss moves that one shot you even if you have +100k HP? Yeah, those moves attack based on a percentage and not the actual stats of the boss. In other words: Isekai cheat skills. Yeah, Iruna bosses have that (Take the L dark souls bosses, You don't want any of this smoke) and you, the player do not (mostly). Fortunately the benevolent Dev Gods did not abandon us this time. We were bestowed the beloved and sacred Rate cut+% that reduce the effect of those techniques. However, like all other iruna mechanics, its not omnipotent. Peaks at 95%. As a bonus the average equip that even has rate cut reduction abilities usually have 10% at max. The highest rate cut stat belonging to Zweig Shield at 20%.
I advice you to stack the first 4 on each other. This is called Defense Layering. It allows you to be a versatile tank that can handle anything thrown at you, a Jack of all tanks if you will. However, there are specialized tank builds.
That's it for now. What? You wanted to learn about ailment res? No one cares about that. Just use a vaccine noob. And what about Max HP+%. Pffft. So basic its not even worth mentioning. Just don't prioritize it over anything else (except regular defense stats).
Of course, there are way more ways to tank like evasion and various quirky defense methods like damage reduction, parry or damage disable. Or even crazier PIE like revive upon death. But that's for another thread.
Edit: Here's a link in case you want all the nerd stuff, equations and shiz for melee and magic res+% and elemental res+%
irunaonline.boards.net/thread/30943/damage-received-calculation
As for equip def stats I haven't found a specific thread explaining it so I'll just tell you how to do it.
You'll have to regular refine your stuff to +9 then go to fort bailune then go to the blacksmith to super refine your equip. A max of +20 defense stats can be added but don't underestimated that +20 equip defense stats.
Also when it comes to the one you should focus on more? Well that'd be melee and magic res+% because of the availability. Then equipment def, then elemental def+%, then rate cut+%. Rate cut techniques occur less frequently than melee and magic attacks which is why rate cut+% should be prioritized less than the others. Not to mention the lack of availability in decent rate cut equips.
