Well, this may not be a shocker to some, but found out last night that Islands (and pets) are tied to your account and not your character! At least the main/orig island, lol
Deleted my only char on one account (have two), and even went so far as to remove my island items (minis). Made a new char, and when I went to the island, my tamed Colon was there already. When I put in my 6 minis, my fed but not tamed Kijimu was back with his 400+ Affinity
Asked around guild, and it sounds like if you have multiple chars on the same account, they all share the same pet(s) on that account too.
