Blade and shield skills are ok (seriously, shield bash is great for a first stun move) but if you want to be a good tank you MUST get survival skills and level up "HP boost" to lv10. Also a skill that proved to be useful was Gloria (Priest skill lv2)
That said, i could give u these tips:
1. VIT.. full tanks use this as main stat, but dmg is greatly reduced, i did 2Dex 1Vit (now my stats are 100dex 47vit) so i could survive and get decent dmg.
2. Get HP boost skill. Tanking will be useless without this. I almost reach 3k hp with this and my actual vit stat.
3. Short combos.. To be a good tank you must avoid all aoe dmg i possible, and for that your combos must be quick enough to move fast. These are my combos:
-Hard hit > Astute > Trigger Slash
-Shield Bash > Hard Hit > Trigger Slash
All must be linked with Consecutive, so the whole combo will be triggered with just 100MP. The result is a quick and cheap combo with chance to Flinch or Stun.
I left my DEX at 100 and going to add VIT until they're 1:1. You should probably get knight skills for provoke/rage sword. I don't think it's a good idea to have too many trees though, because we still don't know everything about them and we can't 100% predict the direction they will evolve to in the future.
I have 68 STR and 35 DEX(the extra ASPD from STR seems more important than the extra HIT at this point). I'm adding VIT already and have 13 VIT so far at level 34. I can tank Decel without using pots really and I consider Decel the strongest boss currently(sorry Flare Volg you are a squishy high HP punching bag lol). So I guess most people are currently adding about 100ish in STR/DEX and then starting VIT.
The main thing that will make you survive better at this point are skills. Here are some useful skills to get:
HP increase from Survival lvl 2. This is mandatory on everyone so obviously you get this. 5 points in Safe Rest unlocks this. Everything else in this tree is unnecessary at the moment.
Heavy Armor Mastery. Increases Guard Rate when wearing Heavy Armor. When you are tanking and using a Shield your best bet is to use Heavy Remodeled armor. This can be done at Blacksmiths via the Strengthen Equipment option. Light Armor is for DPS and is what Knuckles use when tanking/doing anything really. Heavy Armor increases DEF/MDEF and has this armor mastery as well.
Gloria is great as well, increases DEF/MDEF and when you are using a Shield it also increases Guard Rate. This is something I think Mages should stick to though as they have more time to do it and better MP management. Tanks should stick to getting aggro/doing damage.
I personally find Protection/Aegis not all that useful. You can either make people take not much damage from Physical attacks/auto attacks and be scared to death of getting hit by an AOE that involves Hellfire(200+damage ticks with Protection suuucks) or you can do the opposite which doesn't work out all that well either. So meh. Also I feel as if mages are in a better place to do this than tanks.
Best Shield at the moment is the Shell Shield(dropped by Tortuga): Guard Rate 24%, Guard Power+12%, Physical Res+2%, Aggro+1%.
Kite Shield is the 2nd best probably and easy to get(from Guardian Statues), then Buckler, then the poor little Golem Shield thing. Guard Rate is usually the priority at this point.
Really though getting the correct skills is more important than the stats at this point haha. Sword+Shield and Knuckles(with Light Armor) can tank anything out currently pretty easily without much issues without worrying about VIT much.
ManaKhe- Lvl 285-300 Enchanter(gotta get dat Mblade and Stoneskin) ManaSel- Lvl 240ish Monk ManaLock- Lvl 147 Servant
Probably not unless you're going to use magic skills. Your magic would still be interrupted a lot because you'll take hits, even if you use Wall. That's why tanks should focus on physical attacks. It would be safest to raise only 1 dmg stat and only 1 defensive stat at this point.
INT may be needed for MDEF, but I don't think it'll work this early in Toram because the current bosses don't require high MDEF to tank. The more preferred option for INT seems to be MTL anyway, but I wouldn't start raising a 3rd stat yet.
These builds seem nice to me:
DEX/VIT/STR (glady type, order could be different but I'd do it like this) DEX/VIT/MTL (good against ailments) DEX/VIT/INT(good DEF/MDEF but weak against ailments)
Just my opinion, VIT/INT/DEX could work if you can deal with the low damage and therefore harder time keeping aggro.
