Many main character's in games are like that.
They are not mute, it's just that you are supposed to imagine the character's response, in your own speech pattern.
You wouldn't relate to a character that spoke with pomp and circumstance if you speak in an informal way in real life. Same goes to people that likes to use the F word and the people that gets offended by it.
It's easier to relate when you can imagine your part of the dialog (with just the general indication of what you were supposed to say).

Though not all, quite a few of the MQ portions does have us having a two-way conversation with NPCs including bosses.

Yeah it would be end of story if we can refuse vania command from begining OK, I can't remember who Vania is but technically, you Can refuse Any MQ by closing the dialogue box, right?
