I don't get how it works. Dealing 16k damage on him sometimes with Backstab, and sometimes only 2 damage. Sometimes 6k. All times I'm behind him---at his direct back. Is there a meaning to this? What am I missing?

backstabbing uses a damage multiplier in its equation. I think it's crit based as well...I don't remember the specifics but like nemesis and a lot of the the third tiers' stronger skills use a multiplier and weird equation, in backstabs case it also has the 'position' of front side back altering the damage. idk for sure I've just done reading for an assassin in my guild.

Mine was the same until I restated to a str build and it got back up to my usual 50k+ someone in guild said str pierces through armor. I'd test it on high def bosses for ya but I'm currently using school WiFi and I always DC with data on xD

there are alot of speculation that str increases physical penetration,
but at the moment the confirmed thing is: adding str improves your att, which helped to break through boss defenses.
Another thing that might be possible in your varied damage in vida- its initial defense is overwhelmingly high, but drops as its HP gets lower, like hydra. Hence your damage increases as it is close to dying. (notwithstanding it becomes weak to dark element near 60% HP)
