So I was chatting with Flarius today regarding his old post about gears that he recommended BS assassins use to maximize damage. Two gears he recommended that caught my eye were an armor included Magonza and Variant. What made them so significant? The fact that both of these add +200 melee. I was, at first, skeptical as to whether or not the +200 melee would affect BS. I mean come on, it says "melee" and we BS Sin's are physical range class. xD Anyways, I decided to put it to the test. I will be conducting two tests. The first will be posted in this post and the second will follow soon after.
Myth Busters Test #1: Variant (Add. Gear, +4% Atk & Matk, Melee +200, Accuracy +50, Crt Dmg +1%, Absolute Evasion -5% Atk 20 Def 7)
Constant Figures:
Base Atk: 1685
No buffs
Weapon: Tknife +0
Test Subject: Chako
Test #1: Add Gear-less = +0 atk thus -> Base Atk: 1685
23380 damage
23095 damage
23005 damage
23380 damage
23345 damage
23005 damage
23005 damage
23380 damage
23095 damage
23380 damage
Total Average Damage per BS: 23207 damage
Test #2: Schmuck/Schlingel(+6%atk, +10atk)(+8%atk, +6atk) = +210 atk thus -> Base Atk: 1895
25545 damage
25505 damage
25655 damage
25525 damage
25525 damage
25505 damage

25505 damage
25525 damage
Total Average Damage per BS: 25543 damage
Test #3: Variant(+4%atk, Melee+200, Crt Dmg+1%) = +80 atk thus -> Base Atk: 1765

Total Average Damage per BS: 24346 damage
--but wait... Variant is supposed to add +200 base damage supposidly? I guess it's safe to say Throwing weapons aren't Melee?*Cough this was pretty obvious Cough* If the variant did add base damage or add base damage but wasn't visible to our stats just like how we get buffs, the damage should've and would've been higher than the schmuck, right? But checking computations, the only thing adding damage was the mere atk% and crt dmg% stats on the equipment.
As stated by zef on my Backstabbing Guide found HERE, backstab is based on the type of weapon being used AND CRIT DMG. If that is the case, wouldn't using atk or crt bonus xtals with a higher bonus than variant or magonza be a better option? AFAIK, a combination of both atk% and crt dmg% is needed to properly work against monsters especially with high def for the crt damage to go in.
Based on this test, I (as in me) believe that the +200 Melee does not affect throwing weapons and backstab. If anyone else would like to conduct a test and disprove this, I would be glad to be corrected but as of this test, I believe that this myth is:
Busted.
