Are melee r stat and equipment def physical res the same thing? Or two different things Both of them shares a common trait: they divide physical attack damage. Melee resistance is superior to equip defense for 1 reason: it's also tabulated when calculating rate cut damage. You can thus have 95% melee res and then declare you have almost capped rate cut. Equip defense is juicy for a few good reasons: mainly because you want to preserve maximum damage from equips while still having some form of protection from receiving boss attacks. A good example is a enchanter with 4 dajartes - they could beef themselves by having max equip defense.

This is how dmg received calculation for melee dmg
Raw dmg - def * (1-(total equip def+ refine/100)) * (1-(melee resist%)) * (1-(elemental resist%)) * (1-(damage cut%)) = received dmg
Equip def only works in reducing melee dmg not magic. This is taken from unwritten formula thread.
