Hello, I'm a level 47 Mage playing the game for the first time and I'm about to go Cleric.
Now my main concern is, I've figured there's two ways I can set my stats before I hit 50 and thus determine my playstyle. It seems I could be a mostly INT build, and focus on spellcasting and healing. However, someone has given me Limni Knuckles, so I could become a melee build, focusing on STR>VIT>AGI>Crit.
I'm unsure on which of these two builds would be "better". I prefer to play a spellcaster, I enjoy using Mana Wave. But I feel like the melee cleric would be far more effective at soloing, and dealing damage, while still maintaining the ability to heal. I noticed that INT does not effect healing power AS heavily as it affects spell damage.
I suppose my main question here is, can anyone give me any advice on which path I should take. I realize one is a Bishop and the other is a Monk. If I did decide to become the melee cleric, could anyone advise me on how to spend my stats before I hit 50? As a melee cleric should I still take some points in Int?

Bishop=By far best healer in the game, it might as well be the ONLY healer in the game. There's Servant's but they are incomplete and inferior in every way(Servants are another Cleric class). Monks aren't a healer really at all but are fantastic at soloing, however Limni Knuckles(I'm guessing these are the Special Claws that get most of their ATK from STR?) are poor for soloing.
A solo Monk build would be more like AGI>CRT>VIT>STR/INT.
Stat wise before 50 its easy. If you wanna be a Bishop/Servant put all your points into INT. If you wanna be a Monk put them all into AGI(to like 120-150ish) and start on CRT after that.
A melee healer really isn't a thing in this game, there is however a melee wizard pretty much(Enchanter).
Another thing with stats: Focused stat builds are key. It is bad to spread your stats out everywhere. This is why a lot of people who are 300+ only have points in 3-4 stats instead of all 6. At lower levels you will pretty much only have points into 2 stats, in some cases its 3. By low levels I mean under like 180.

Thanks ManaKhe, that is a helpful reply. Is my idea of playing a Cleric that uses melee effectively and still has points in INT hopeless? I know about the two(?) magic swords in the game that do melee damage based on MATK, but with a good weapon(rod?), will I ever be able to do even a little melee damage as a full INT cleric? I see at the moment my True Rod attacks do about 250~ compared to my 1000 damage Mana Waves.

First you must determine which class are you heading for, is it bishop or monk?
'Cause if distiributing stat points isn't well thought yet you dont have plan to reset stats it will cause you trouble along the way.
If you are going bishop you can use throwing weapon for the meantime if you want to become melee type til you get the better skills of a bishop like nemesis (lv.180)
Throwing weapon based atk comes from Int/Str/Dex
On the other hand which is monk, refer to the Monk section and check the builds and see which one do you prefer in case you are heading towards this class

That is good news to me. So all throwing weapons scale off int/str/dex evenly? I'm a little confused about that part

Refer to ThisSince you said you prefer a bishop who cast spells and focus on support deparment then going Int/dex using a throwing weapon for the meantime will be the good path til you switch to Rods which bishop commonly use. Since Bishop's most common build is Int/dex/vit so its a win-win for you. Simply to say that since you want to become melee type for the meantime as you starting the used of throwing weapon is your segway til you get the skills of a fully bishop without compromising your stat distiribution for a full support/nemesis type bishop.

Thank you Maescia, that is very helpful and answered pretty much all my questions. Just a few more closing questions, could you recommend any Throwing Weapons I could easily get? And do you know how possible it would be for me to get my hands on the magic sword Sinbad?

ryakashi This is what I found on the Web it is outdated though. Regarding on Sinbad Magic sword gains atk from Int and Dex too so that will work as well. Since it is a sword you can also use Myrica Wristlet [special eq] which raises your vit based on 50% of your lvl when wielding a sword. If you wear Myrica with Sinbad you are lv50 and u get 25 vit by default, that helps you on HP for survivability.
